I am concerned with how you are going to approach this with him. He's coming off of a breach, which is always disorienting. And I presume you never even discussed this with him before you made the decision.
Not to ask his permission, obviously, but to tell him it is a possibility?

I can wait a little while to let him recover from the breach, I just don't
want to let it go so long that he finds out some way other than me telling
