Character Name: Lester Sheehan
Series: Shutter Island
Age: Mid-30s
From When?: September of 1954. Right before Andrew's surgery.

Warden Justification: Sheehan is well versed in helping people who aren’t in control of themselves. While the patients at Ashecliffe were far from superpowered beings, he comes in with experience with the ones society has given up on. He believes very strongly in treating everyone like a person who deserves respect and empathy, no matter their background. Naturally, Sheehan has a particular fondness for the “worst” cases.

Perhaps most importantly, Sheehan wants to be here. He wants to help people, no matter the circumstances. While the Admiral's deal would have been admittedly unusual, he would have jumped at the chance. The Deal is less important than the work.

Item: His little black notebook

Abilities/Powers: He’s about as baseline human as you can get.

Wardening Strategies and Philosophies: Sheehan is the sort of warden who will take to almost anyone. He’s not afraid of the megalomaniacal sorts, and he doesn't scare easily. He's exceptionally adaptable, taking everything in stride. The Barge is just another Ashecliffe, though it floats through space and time. And even that fantastical part will be easily compartmentalized, because if there's one thing Lester Sheehan can do, it's compartmentalize. He keeps himself aloof, never revealing details about himself to anyone, patients and friends alike. He keeps his feelings and true thoughts close to himself, doling out truths like tiny bits of bribery sweets. Though he doesn't typically lie, not outright, he is skilled at deflection, ensuring that questions are answered with minimal fact involved. When it comes to an inmate, he doesn't believe that he needs to be emotionally vulnerable to teach that skill.

Additionally, Sheehan is absolutely the face of overly invested. Back at Ashecliffe, has a home on the hospital’s island and very rarely takes vacations. He lives and breathes his work and so, for him, it’s very hard to turn off that charming, witty, good guy exterior to people. He never really makes friends because he can’t. He’s taught himself to keep it all inside, to never let himself be anything more than a doctor. He’s the one that people rely on; he has to be constantly steady. This sort of hypocritical thinking sabotages most personal relationships he might otherwise have, but he doesn’t know how to do anything else. Those aren't a priority when he can pour his entire being into the people who need him. All that matters is the work. Of course this will be tested aboard the Barge. He will get his own personal growth out of being more open because it's not his default state. It's very much a weakness he brings, though he doesn't see it as such. He sees it as a protection, not just for himself, but for the other person. Because of this, any inmate who needs an instant deep, personal connection to their warden might not do well with him. He is capable of it, but it's a slow burn, born of trust and necessity.

However, he comes with a repertoire of strengths, especially when it comes to listening. He doesn't believe in harsh punishments and his ideas, especially for his time, are very radical. He is infinitely patient and creative in the way that he deals with people. He is willing to dive right in with a person, be on their side, and be exceptionally empathetic. He has dealt with people who do terrible, terrible things and he doesn't judge. Not even the worst of them. He is able to handle violence just fine, having served in World War II as a young man. He may not admit it aloud, but he understands what it is to hurt other people.

Sheehan is a revolutionary doctor. He believes that patients don’t need drugs or radical treatments in order to get better. He believes that treating them as people, that making sure that they have dignity and respect, is the best way to help them. He will use drugs as a last resort, but only in the most violent and desperate of cases. He uses group therapy and one-on-one sessions in order to gain some insight into his patients and he gets very involved in the tougher ones. He doesn’t see anyone as hopeless and will go so far as to immerse himself in his patients’ hallucinations and beliefs in order to help them see through their psychosis.

In that, he’s very loyal to his patients and, subsequently, will be the same with his inmate. He doesn’t care what the rest of the world thinks; he’s going to do what he believes is right by his patients. More importantly, he’s going to see it through to the very end. He will just want his inmate to realize that he is there for them and he is willing to do anything to help them. He will stand by their side and follow them through hell if he thinks that it will help them. Their failures feel like his own failures. And if he can’t help them, then he feels that it is something wrong with him. He takes it personally. This sort of loyalty and dedication is exactly how he would treat any inmate he works with or is paired with.

Deal: Andrew getting a second chance at saving his children.

History: His background is a bit of a mystery, though it’s revealed that Sheehan’s family comes from money. He hated his father, and they lived on Park Avenue in New York. He fought in North Africa in 1942, but was so scarred by the experience that he doesn’t talk about it much.

When he came to Ashecliffe five years ago, he was young and eager to learn. Under the guidance of Dr. Cawley, he managed to adopt a very radical notion of thinking, using pharmapsychology only when necessary, rather than as a first response. He flourished under that philosophy, earning the respect of the other doctors, the orderlies and, most importantly, the patients.
