It's not that I think he or anyone else did for selfish reasons; I don't think they were being self-aggrandizing or whatever. But I do think they were trying to present a united front of support to shut down naysayers, even naysayers from my past who aren't even around, and that wasn't what I wanted.

Unfortunately, the people who need to be protected are often too prideful to admit it.

I don't think you need protection. Not in that way, at least, but it is a difficult accusation to beat.
